  1. Unclear speech

Does your child speak in a way that is hard to understand, especially for people outside the family? If you often have to ask them to repeat themselves or explain what they said to others, it is worth having their pronunciation checked by a speech therapist.

  2. Tongue pushing between the teeth when speaking

Do you notice your child's tongue sitting between their teeth when they say certain sounds? It is worth booking a consultation even if your child is easy to understand.

  3. Difficulty pronouncing sounds such as R, SZ, Ż, CZ, DŻ

Does your child replace sounds with others, leave them out or pronounce them in an unusual way, for example saying “safa” instead of “szafa”? A speech therapist will assess whether this pronunciation is still typical for your child's age or needs support.

  4. Difficulty telling similar-sounding sounds apart, such as S–Ś–SZ, C–Ć–CZ, Z–Ź–Ż, DZ–DŹ–DŻ

Does your child find it hard to hear the difference between sounds such as S–Ś–SZ, C–Ć–CZ or DZ–DŹ–DŻ? If they mix them up when listening and speaking, it is worth checking how they recognise and tell apart the sounds of Polish.

  5. Difficulty with the correct position of the tongue and lips

Do you notice that at rest your child often has slightly open lips and a low tongue, or one that slips between the teeth? During the consultation the speech therapist will assess their position and tell you whether exercises or an additional specialist consultation are needed.

  6. Frequent mouth breathing

Does your child often breathe through their mouth during the day or sleep with their mouth open, even when they do not have a cold? It is worth finding the cause — besides a speech therapy assessment, an ENT consultation may be needed.

  7. Difficulties with speech and communication development

Are you worried that your child uses few words, has trouble building sentences, understanding instructions or expressing their needs? For bilingual children we take into account how communication develops in both languages and how often the child is in contact with each of them.

  8. Difficulty learning to read and write in Polish

Does your child find it hard to join letters into words, recognise sounds or write down what they hear? If the difficulties continue despite regular practice, it is worth checking what support they need, taking into account their age and experience with Polish.
